During World War II, Gantner was mentored by a curator from the museum in Belfort who initiated him into the world of oil painting. Closed to the public during the War, Ganter had the museum practically to himself. There, he studied medieval to contemporary works. Bernard Gantner (1928-2018) was a French artist who showed promise at a very early age. During WWII, he found himself as one of the few remaining guardians of the museum of Belfort.
